Der Graf von Luxemburg

Saturday was the Staatstheater Kassel's premiere of the operetta.
A retiring opera singer agrees to marry an older man. He's a Fursten, which is kind of like a Duke I think. She needs money, he's in love with her. The hitch: she's an ordinary citizen and can't jump social class that quickly. So the Fursten arranges for her to marry our hero, The Graf from Luxemburg, and then quickly divorce when the marriage is unconsummated after 3 months' time. The Graf agrees because he needs money. He doesn't expect to ever meet the opera singer; they get married behind a screen. Of course, they meet and fall in love.

I play a waitress. The other dancers and I run around with trays and napkins, trip down the stairs, run screaming out of the elevator, pull faces, polka. This lasts about 8 minutes of the 3 hour opera for 19 performances. In the remaining 2 hours and 52 minutes, we do the same thing, but backstage.

We do have one fancy number where we promenade and waltz in top hats and fancy dresses.

Our favorite conductor, Jens, is in charge. From the wings, we watch him on the video monitors, and try to learn his special hand gestures.

This makes Ekaterine very happy.

PIn Cheih, in drag, plays the head waiter.

She likes to pet her mustasche. We like to pet her.
